Do you ever wish you could be beamed up?

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to press an escape pod and be delivered to our home planet? We think that Earth is our home planet, but we hope that the illusion will soon be dropped and that we will truly find our place in outer space. Wouldn't that be nice? You feel out of place and out of sorts as a human, so you wonder what else is out there for you. You wonder if you truly belong to the right species or if you were supposed to be on Zebulon after all. And then one day in the middle of the night, you are quietly beamed black back to your home planet. Your family greets you with open arms, and all the memories come rushing back to you. You were sent to Earth to gather information, but now your mission is done.

You feel no regret about what you did on earth, and you look back on that with fondness. But you don't wish you could go back. You're home now. Your true home, and that feels a lot better than your false one. Maybe we will get to experience this one day, but for now, we're trapped on Earth. But that doesn't mean we can't dream of alternate realities. It's why we find ourselves so drawn to science fiction. It shows us new worlds and new ways of possibility, ones that will shake us out of our day-to-day. Science fiction is incredibly important for this reason.

It's easy to get trapped in your own feeling of reality, one that you have very little control over. You wish you could escape the goings on of this planet and its particular woes. Aren't things bad enough down here? When we go to the movies or watch TV, we might not want to see a world that looks like our own. Sometimes we just want to get swept away into something entirely different. That's where the science fiction comes in. It imagines new possibilities. And then we can look at memes that celebrate those worlds. And the fun just keeps on going.
